Accomplishments: Working for YOU! |
|
What do you offer residents as our Mayor? The biggest challenges our Council and residents face involve managing money—your tax dollars and mine. I bring strong financial management and project planning skills and experience. For two years prior to taking office, I attended almost every township council meeting to immerse myself in the issues. Over the past 4 years, I have dedicated a great deal of time and effort to this job. As a member of the Council, I have worked hard on committees and boards to get results for our residents. It does take a lot of time and I love the work. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping to make our Township a better place. You talk about controlling taxes, so what have you done? As member of the finance committee for the past 3 years, I have had a direct impact our budget and taxes. And the story is good! Municipal taxes have increased only 5.7% in 3 years (or about 2.8% per year). That is a great result considering that in the years prior to my involvement we saw our taxes increases 19.6% from 2003 to 2005 or about 9.8% per year. Throughout the past 3 years, your Council has decreased costs while continuing to deliver the services you expect from the Township. But my taxes still seem to be increasing... Taxes have increasd but not the way they had in the past. Previous administrations raised taxes as much as 15% annually. We've held tax increases to less than 3%. For the past four budget cycles, I've worked with the Council to keep municipal costs within the rate of inflation, about 4%. Think about what you get for your municipal taxes. Municipal services include police, fire and EMS coverage 24 hours, 7 days weekly. The cost of our police department is entirely funded by municipal taxes. While volunteer members fo the fire and EMS departments offset the total cost, we still contribute funds and purchase equipment to provide these services. Over the past few years we have purchased new fire trucks and ambulances to ensure these important services are available when residents need them. Streets and roads were sorely neglected in the past. We've worked to ensure that roads are maintained and plowed. We also take pride in our parks and recreation facilities, which are maintained and in the process of being expanded. All these services and more for about $850 per year on the average home. In
contrast to municipal services, something to consider is
that Township schools and the regional high school cost $4,686
and
$2,483, respectively, for the average homeowner. And the
County
takes about $1,774 in tax dollars. But while the
Council can't directly control those taxing
bodies, we can set a positive example on how to hold taxes
down. We
have
proactively
addressed local and regional school
budgets when defeated by the voters. For the second
consecutive
year, the Council has recommended cuts that didn't affect educational
programs and still granted
relief to taxpayers.

Working through people to get results and serve the interests of our residents.... I manage an open, interactive, and accountable government. I'm not a "professional politician." No members of my family are elected or appointed officials. I don't aspire to government office within the County or State. My desire to serve the Township comes from being a concerned citizen. I'm a Township resident, taxpayer, homeowner, parent, spouse, and working professional. I also enjoy working within the community and serving as an elected member of your townsihp council. It's a great source of pride and accomplishment. I have no "agenda" and I expect nothing in return except knowing that I do what is right and in the best interests of taxpayers and residents of Clinton Township. The Mayor, Council, and Township staff work well together. You might wonder why that should be important to you. Clinton Township took back its government from hired consultants who ran our town. Now the people you elected manage the Township's business. The Township staff are a new team of professionals who work to serve our residents. They don't serve local political parties or work for special interests. And because we all share the same goals and work well together, we are doing more with less. We have maintained or increased services with fewer staff and lower tax increases. Just as importantly, we also listen to you. We reach out and respond to residents, which is exactly how I will continue to govern our Township. As Mayor, I expect all officials and staff to put the interests of Clinton Township residents first. Anything
else from your work on the Council that you are proud of? In addition to keeping municipal taxes down, which I've discussed a lot on this site... I'm also leading the mediation team working with the Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) to resolve ongoing issues, and I've assumed a leadership role in working wtih 57 towns across New Jersey to request the court to overturn these new rules. We worked intensively to develop a sound affordable housing plan, which is based on thoughtful planning and reasonable assumptions. These new rules serve to undermine our excellent and productive efforts. Another accomplishment is the acquisition of the "White Cloud" property adjacent to Bundt Park. I led the acquisition team to acquire this outstanding piece of land, which allows us to expand the highly successful Bundt Park. Even better news is that we worked with the Open Space Commission to utilize existing funds for open space. No additional taxes needed to be raised to acquire this property and expand the park for our residents. |
